Tax on winnings

Ghana withheld ten per cent of winnings, and the detail that made it bite was that it applied to the gross rather than to the profit: money staked and won back was taxed as if it were a gain. It ran from 2023 until it was repealed on 2 April 2025, and a licensed operator pays winnings in full today.

Both halves of that have to travel together. Writing that this market taxes winnings is now wrong. Writing that it has always been free of tax is also wrong, and it is wrong about the years most readers remember, including anybody reconciling an older payout against what they expected.

A separate tax on operators still exists, levied on what the companies take rather than on what a customer receives, and it does not reduce a payout. An operator's own published terms are not a safe source on any of this: at least one set of terms on this register still describes a withholding rate that no longer applies and never matched the repealed one.
